In order to provide students and all stake holders with a clear interpretation of the grading scale above, the following achievement scales were created for ENGL 097 and ENGL 098. The achievement scales clearly indicate the degree to which students have attained the student learning outcomes by skill area at the end of Levels 1 & 2 as a result of instruction.
ENGL 097 Level Progression
Progression from ENGL 097 to the ENGL 098 is determined at the end of each term. Students are assessed throughout the term, and promotion is confirmed using the following criteria:
- Student must have a minimum overall average grade of 70% for course work and common assessments.
- Student should meet the minimum requirement for the next level (Main Flight ≥ 350 on TAKEKITE Test: an adaptive and objective, multiple-choice examination that tests grammar, reading, and listening and ≥ 350 on KITE Writing).
- Student who does not have an overall course average of 70% will be required to repeat the level.
ENGL 097 Achievement Scale
ENGL 097 – Level 1 Low Intermediate Students entering EFU with CEFR level A1 to A2 and who pass at 70% of course total score or above should be able to demonstrate the following: |
Reading and Vocabulary: Students will demonstrate comprehension of low intermediate level (CEFR A2+ to low B1) multi-paragraph written texts by identifying the purpose, main ideas, and important details of a text. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic low-intermediate level vocabulary by placing it accurately in context. |
Listening and Vocabulary: Students will demonstrate comprehension of low intermediate level (CEFR A2+ to low B1) passages (lectures, discussions, debates, and interviews) by identifying and inferring the topic, purpose, main ideas, and important details. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic low-intermediate level vocabulary by placing it accurately in context. |
Writing and Grammar: Students will respond to a prompt appropriately by producing simple, coherent 4-paragraph informative academic essays with an introduction, body, and conclusion (CEFR A2+ to low B1). Students will adequately support their ideas by integrating their experiences, observations, and recommending a relevant course of action. They will produce mostly simple and some limited complex language with reasonable accuracy as well as use common connectors and transitions. |
Speaking: Students will demonstrate presentation skills and spoken fluency by planning and delivering a timed, informative, academic presentation of 4-6 minutes using platform and organizational skills. Students will also produce relevant and coherent responses to on-demand interactive topic discussions on familiar and general topics with peers and instructors in an academic setting. They will produce language to ask for clarifications, agree, disagree, take turns, and offer recommendations towards a course of action. |
